There are two Eagle Festivals. The first is about two hours away from Ulgii in Sagsai soum (soum or town, the second smallest administrative unit in Mongolia) and takes place on the second weekend of September. The second is the Golden Eagle Festival, which is a bigger festival in the Bugat region held a few weeks later on the first weekend of October. Each festival will continue for about two days. We offer a program to tourists who come to Ulgii to visit the countryside, meet some of the families and stay with them for 2-3 days before or after an Eagle Festival in order to learn more about the daily life of eagle hunters.

Day 1
Upon arrival in Ulaanbaatar you will be met at the airport and, after hotel check-in, we will take you on a city sightseeing tour and host a welcome dinner. (Hotel/D)

Day 2
Ulaanbaatar – Ulgii.
Fly to Ulgii City in Bayan-Ulgii province of Western Mongolia. At the local airport, you’ll meet your English-speaking guide, driver and expedition cook. We will take you to visit a Kazakh Eagle hunter family, about 1.5 hours by minivan, and stay overnight in a Ger. (/L.D)

Day 3/4
Stay with Nomadic family
We will spend these two days with a Kazakh family, We’ll get up at the same time as the nomadic people and you can go horse back riding during the day.
There will be plenty to see and do. Ride with Kazakh herdsmen, watch how they take care of their animals, help them process dairy products and sample their traditional food. Explore the real way of living of a regular nomadic family. Personally experience their friendliness and hospitality
This day we’ll ride to the family of an Eagle hunter and he will show us their training methods. You will be introduced to the art of eagle hunting and can talk with the hunters (through an interpreter) about how he trains and hunts with his eagle. The tradition of hunting with Eagles goes back thousands of years in central Asia. (Overnight with Kazakh family). (Ger/B/L/D)

Day 5/6
Return to Ulgii: Eagle Festival
These two days we’ll attend the Golden Eagle Festival. Festivities begin with the hunter’s parade where hunters display their traditional hunting outfits, accessories and traditional dress. Day two includes competitions and presentations demonstrating the special relationship between the trainer and his bird of prey. You will be able to experience a number of these Kazakh traditions first-hand by joining the hunters to watch them pamper their birds and call them during the competitions. Day 7
In the morning or in the afternoon, we will catch the return flight to Ulaanbaatar and transfer you to your hotel.
